Motorcycles are stolen ALOT and if the title (proof of ownership) is not availible run away.

The title can also be a 'salvage' title which means it was totlaed then rebuilt. Again run.

It is best to get out of any deal that looks fishy. bikes can have alot of problems that are not obvious. Buy a bike with a clear clean title and from someone who you think is honest.

If the bike is spary painted and they call it custom paint that is a good hint to run.

Some machines like dirt bikes and 4-wheelers don't have titles and are therefore not streetable. In Missouri, a non-titled machine can be titled to be made street legal, but all safety equipment must be installed (tail, brake, direction, license plate and head lights, horn, etc) and then inspected by the Highway Patrol. It's then issued a new VIN (vehicle identification number) which is required for the department of revenue to issue a title. If you're looking at a street legal machine and there's no title, do as the other guys said and clear out pronto. If the guy owes money on it and the bank has the title, go to the bank with him, have the bank produce the title and THEN pay the guy although more than likely you'll pay the bank rather than the owner. NEVER pay before the seller has signed and given you the title. Apparently in a few states, machines over 20 years old are not issued a title and all you get is a bill of sale. If in doubt, call the department of motor vehicles or the local state police or highway patrol and get the straight scoop. I once looked at a Harley a friend had for sale. He'd bought it with the promise the seller would get him the title. Well, the seller had never gotten it from the PREVIOUS seller! Unable to get it titled, that meant no plates and he eventually sold it for parts.

Some states just recently started forcing people to get titles. So its possible that you buy a really older motorcycle and it has no title. In that case what you would need is a registration from the previous owner showing that they had proof of ownership. Again this rule only applies to really older bikes. Other than that they should all have a title , so i suggest staying away from those that dont have one.

A motorcycle has a title just like a car - if they don't have the title it must mean that they have financed the bike and they still owe or they have stolen the bike. Otherwise they could get a duplicate of the title from the state.

Yes--- that is how the license plates are issued... No title no deal... Check the ID the numbers on the bike... NO numbers on the bike no deal. Different numbers than on the bike no deal... Deal or no Deal... Got to have clean paper work. No titles could be stolen bike... Or they may owe money to the finance company...no deal
