I absolutley love modern big band. Not a big fan of vocals. Here is a short but representative list of my favorite bands:

Buddy Rich Big Band
Louie Bellson
Maynard Ferguson (with and without Big Bop Nouveau)
Airmen of Note
Stan Kenton
Bob Florence Limited Edition
Terry Gibbs Dream Band
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band
Wayne Bergeron
Mike Vax
Bill Watrous
Thilo Wolf (EXCELLENT German band)

I like large ensemble jazz. I say I like "modern" sounding big band but that's because I don't know how else to categorize this type of music as it encompasses practically every style of jazz. These big bands are very versatile. I guess you could say I really like high energy jazz. It doesn't have to be fast (Wayne Bergeron has some beautiful ballads), but it has to have lots of energy. Screaming trumpets is a plus, but not necessary. I have about 10 gigs and I want my collection to keep on growing, so who would you suggest? Loud is good too.

OMG! High five!!! My cd collection is practically the same as yours!!! Gordon Goodwin and Buddy Rich are my favourite.

To add to your list, Sammy Nestico and the SWR Big Band, the John Fedchock Big Band, Bob Mintzer... then I also like Brian Setzer, but you mightn't cos he does mainly vocals.

Check them out anyway, see what you think! I'm gonna check out a few on your list! Thanks!

I really like the Mingus Big Band. This is an ensemble that specializes in the compositions of the late Charles Mingus. They're a bit more avant-garde than your list but definitely high-energy and swinging. And yes, they have some screaming trumpet passages.
