The history of the middle finger salute dates back to some English King (can't remember which one - years?) and his campaign in France. His army was badly outnumbered and the night before the battle, he and his archers heard the French boast about cutting off the first and middle fingers of the archers after they (the French) had won the battle (because without their two fingers, the English would be useless as archers).
Well, the English beat the French and in a move of defiance against French arrogance, the English archers gave the French a two-finger salute ( the V sign, but showing the backs of their fingers) to show that the English had their fingers and were victorious and the French were not.
The American one-finger salute means that the person giving it is being rebellious against the receiver!

Here in England it has a very specific meaning. Putting it politely, it means go away! Less politely, up yours! I'll leave you to figure out the even less polite meanings! Hope this helps
