I'm confused about a certain step in a problem at this site:

http://purplemath.com/modules/distform.htm#to_quiz

If you follow the link, it's the very last example. How are they getting y^2? I don't understand.

They got the y^2 term when they squared the binomial (-1 - y).

(-1 - y)^2 = (-1 - y)(-1 - y) = (-1)(-1) + (-y)(-1) + (-y)(-1) + (-y)(-y) = 1 + y + y + y^2 = 1 + 2y + y^2

(-1-y)^2=(-1)^2+(-y)^2+(-1)(-y)
=y^2+y+1

they got it like this...

(-1-y)^2

(-1-y)(-1-y)

foil

(-1)(-1) + (-1)(-y) + (-y)(-1) + (-y)(-y)

1+y+y+y^2

y^2 + 2y +1
