There are some motherboards that have more than one pci-x slots, but they're uncommon. You have to specifically look for them. Usually, there is only 1 slot.

Most motherboards only have one PCI-E x16 slot for video. There some motherboards which have two, but they are higher-end, and therefore more expensive.

Combining two identical Nvidia cards to drive a single display is called SLI mode, so if a motherboard is advertised as SLI-ready that means it's got 2 PCI-E slots and can do this.

With ATI cards it's called Crossfire- same story except the cards don't have to be the exact same model. In any case whichever dual-card mode a motherboard supports dicates which brand of video cards you must use- you can't combine Nvidia cards on Crossfire motherboards, or ATI cards on SLI motherboards.

Depending on you motherboard, you may have more than one PCI-E slot. Often, motherboard manufacturers make special boards for running SLI (Nvidia dual graphics cards) or Crossfire (ATI dual graphics). If the board is certified SLI or Crossfire, then you can run both at the SAME TIME. That is the key part. They work together like one graphics card.

If the board does not support SLI or Crossfire, then you can put two graphics cards in there, but you will only be able to run ONE at a time.

There are some main/motherboards that have two PCI-X slots but not many and they are expensive.

On the other hand there is an after market company that makes an external PCI-X card. You might want to try that. The URL is listed below.
