In the sense of choosing between these three, what would you say is the best?

None of them are that good as players - whatever their other attributes - but I think Sting is the most technically agile and able to improvise.

Of the 3, Sting. But there are so many better ones. Billy Sheehan, Victor Wooten, Jeff Berlin, Oteil Burbridge, Jaco Pastorius to name just a few.

well thats kind of a toughy. Sting - no. I LOVE paul but nec for his basswork - ditto Roger Waters but if i HAD to pit the two against each other it would be Paul.
Now for the really amazing bassists :
Geddy Lee (Rush)
Chris Squire (yes)
Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy, Yngwie)

Those 3 are all kinda weak as bass players, but very good song writers.

Chris Squire - best rock bass player ever.
