There are a some books and DVD's out there that will tell you you can do this but I think this is B.S. The source of much mental illness is the result of pretending certain undesirable feelings aren't there. Mentally healthy people don't make their feelings go away. They process them. When they are sad they feel sad. They think about the sadness, talk about it to other people and then the sadness passes in time. If they don't do this, it stays with them until it's addressed. If they feel fear, they think about what's the best way to handle the fear and what's the best thing to do about it.
Trying to control feelings just results in invalidating them, which makes you feel worse because not only do you still have the feeling, you feel bad for having it because you're not supposed to be having it.
You can handle your feelings. This includes disappointment, depression, sadness, happiness, exitement and so on. Your feelings are the source of much strength and intuition. Your human-ness comes from your feelings. Much of the time your feelings are right when your head is wrong. In fact, it's impossible to grow emotionally without experiencing and processing feelings. You can be intellectually brilliant and still be a child emotioinally: not being able to handle disappoinment, thinking feelings are going to last forever and so on.
Don't believe those false images of people who go into battle or start a new job without doubt or fear. These are myths. And unfortunate myths because they give people false standards to try to achieve.

to a point it may be possible to hide the EXTENT of an emotion. for example you can be incredibly angry at somebody and not show your full anger and hide most of it, it is hard to pretend you arent angry at all if that is how u truley feel.

you could attempt to hide and control them, but it will still show through no matter how hard you try. and in the end you will end up letting them loose.

some people can hide their emotions fully, and i say GOOD FOR YOU. i wish i could do that!

EDiT:
do you mean as in you feel a certain way, and you dont want to feel that way anymore..??
hmm...well you know hiding it and denying it wont help it go away. you will have to figure out what causes the emotion and attempt to stop it.

and i missed you too Belier!!!!!!!

Well , I know I can't & I don't even try any more !

For me there are two main reasons.....

Firstly I have seen at first hand the effect of people trying to contain their emotions & feelings for whatever reason & Mama is right , it ends up causing serious physical & mental problems .

Secondly , other people get hurt & misunderstandings can occur because they misinterpret what is going on. How we act & react is often dictated by what is going on in our hearts & head ....if we aren't accepting the reality of our feelings the signals we give can confuse people ..

I believe that repressing your feelings or what they call "bottling up" will manifest itself physically.
feelings are part of you just like your hands, feet or anything else: try ignoring your hands.
feelings cannot be ignored. they need to be acknowledged, made part of you and only then you can take a conscious decision not to act upon them.

Sometimes, logic or circumstances dictates that you don't follow them: This doesn't mean that they will go away, but by recognizing them you will spare yourself the constant battle trying to bury them and pretend that they are not there.

ignoring and controling your own feelings happen all the time actually. I became talented in that part. i don't know if i can teach you that, it's something you acquire by time..
why the hell you wanna do that? It's gonna kill you..

It's not a good idea to ignore your feelings, they will resurface one way or another. you have to work with them not against them if you want to control them.
