My real estate agent told me this as a solution to why there is a 1/2" of soot in my attic. I've never heard of such a thing but thought I'd check around.

Are you sure it is soot? Could it just be dust because the attic hasn't been cleaned? Some insulation looks a lot like soot. If you are sure it is soot, then I'd look to see if there's any sign of charing in the attic. And if there's no sign of charing and it is really soot, then the real estate agent might just be right.

I had that much soot in the attic of a hundred and fifty year old house I once owned..it was coal soot from being near train tracks and from when back when everything ran on coal and there was no EPA.....ashes as insulation is, er, pretty far fetched
