Most drivers start before they are 18, so as you get older your chances decrease. It's not so much that you've never had an accident or that you have good hand eye coordination but you must be in athletic shape and have nerves of steel. Driving a car 160mph+ just inches from other cars requires your nerves to be like steel and driving for many hours continuously can take a toll on your body. Think about it again before you get into it because its going to cost you A LOT of money before your able to make money but the best chance you have is to build a car and find a local racetrack to test you skill. Maybe there you'll catch a break and get the sponsorship your looking for.

Money is the blood that keeps alive the career of a driver before they become paid professionals.

There is absolutely no way, unfortunately, for a driver to simply shine in karting and get offered paid drives in any level of the sport.

Lewis Hamilton, as a hot topic and thus good example, had a father who worked several jobs at once, and once he had made that bold move of talking to Ron Dennis he had backing from Dennis.

Autosport and RACER (sister publications) ran a piece earlier this year that estimates it takes $9-million US to go from karts to the eve of an F1 career. The latter being you're in GP2 and you've paid to have some F1 test days.

Everyone doing it these days has had personal sponsors along the way or they've come from monied backgrounds.

Well...you can't do it with "no money." Many of the pros had parents that were racers themselves, or invested a ton of their money in their kids' racing career. Nascar recognizes them and brings them aboard.
You have to race, and win a lot to be noticed. The local papers need to write about you, people need to to talk, etc...as well as getting sponsors. But sponsors don't pay everything, it'll still cost money to race.

YOU cant enter F1 without money.... you need lots of money in the form of sponcers.... thats because you have to pay the money to the builders to drive for them..
