If you look around in a shopping center after Halloween you will find alot of seven foot Christmas trees on display, however cutting down a tree for yourself is quite different as most people chose a tree based on it's beauty and not it's height!

I would have to say 6' because most homes have 8' ceilings and by the time you add the stand and the ornament on top you're getting really close to the ceiling.
