Selfmade, wouldn't being free mean you'd have the ability to be anti-American if you so pleased? Or that there would be no such thing as illegal immigrants because they would be 'free' to come and go as they please? I don't think we will ever become a 'land of the free' simply because that is anarchy in a patriotic guise. Being a 'land of the free' means that we would have to abolish the fcc, the bureau of alcohol, firearms, tobacco, and explosives, and legalize all drugs, amongst other things. I'm certainly in favor of most of these things, but I know the 'moral' republicans, the biggest flag wavers and land-of-the-free sayers, would have a heart attack of something like that were to come about.

When enough of the people finally get fed up with the corruption in the government to the point of revolution.

That revolution may take the form of voting out all of the corrupt officials or armed insurrection.

Only then will the government once again belong to the people.

When we citizens demand it. Freedom isn't easy, it is something that needs to be guarded and cared for. My Great Grandmother use to be amazed at the freedoms we were giving up in order to "protect" each other. When the seatbelt law passes I thought she would have a heart attack. She use to say that when one gave up the freedom to make a mistake, and turned the responsibility to someone else, it is hard to demand any freedom at all.

As Ben Franklin said:
“Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security”
