Tarkovski's "Solaris"..How do you compare it to Clooney's version of recent years..I don't mean editing or the psychedic rushes..But the film as a whole..any differing thoughts? Thanks.

Tarkovski's "Solaris" is beautiful, subtle, and deep; but its languid pace will bore you if you think science fiction equates to action. The Steven Soderbergh version with George Clooney is a much more conventional movie. Soderbergh's "Solaris" ends up being about the protagonist's attempt to regain his lost love, while Tarkovski focuses on the attempts by Dr. Kelvin and the very alien entity to understand one another. As a long-time reader of science fiction and a lover of good film making, I greatly prefer the Russian film.

Well, the old one's a lot longer and more "artsy" than the Clooney version.
