I actually just recently asked this question to my son's pediatrician. They recommend that a child does not go in a swimming pool until 6 months (also when it is ok to start using sunblock). However, if the pool is not chlorinated (maybe a baby pool with just regular water), then it is fine as long as the temperature is not too cold and the umbilical cord (& circumcision if they have one) is healed. Babies cannot regulate their temperature like we can. If you do take them in the pool, be sure to keep it to limited time periods and keep them out of the sun as they will get sunburned easily. Also, be sure to keep ahold of the little one & try to use a flotation device as well. They make life vests for infants because they are required on boats.

You can take them for short periods of time as early as you want. Just make sure they don't get cold and try to stay out of the sun. Sunscreen should only be used sparingly before 6 months. Mom/tot swim classes usually start at 6 months.

well SOME people think that swimming is good at any time some people chose to give birth in water. however i think that's ridiculous. wait until the babys' immune system is strong. i would wait till well 4 month's is pushing it 5 month's is pretty good.
i'm totally against those who let the baby's go in the water. sooooo stupid and dangerous. i think just holding the baby in the pool is cool or allowing the baby to float in the water while being supported by you is fine.
all parent's are different. everyone has their way of doing thing's this i understand but, why would you risk your baby in getting sick or drowing just to see? that's insanity.

Any time.
Newborns are excellent in water.
Although you will want to wait until both of you are recovered from birth, after you 6 weeks is best.

Honestly... When you feel ready to take your baby swimming.. Wait until atleast the umbilical cord is healed.. They do have swimming classes for babies..
Make sure the water is warm enough.. babies can not regulate their temps..

i took my son in the pool for the first time when he was about 6 weeks old. i just held him the whole time and kept him in the shade with a hat on and plenty of baby sunblock. he loved it! just be sure not to stay out too long, maybe 15 minutes?

Ask your pediatrician but I would guess it would be okay (as long as the water wasn't too cold), as soon as the baby's belly button has healed.

About when they can stand up with a little support but almost by themselves. They should have all of thier most important shots because the water is very germy and newborns can get sick very fast.
