I am in IT and want to switch from Sys Admin to dot net programming; which one would be good to learn in order to get my foot in the door? I've seen books on VB.net, C++.net, etc., and I would like advice on which is the best to learn first. Thanks in advance!

It looks like C# is the one; are you saying learn C# dot net, or just learn the C# language first, then the dot net version??

While other languages are supported, the .NET community has settled on C# for the main .NET language. Start with that.

EDIT:
You need to read the wikipedia page on C# and .NET . You'll learn that there are no special versions of C#. C# only exists on .NET because that is the only platform that implements the language.

You should learn C# if you would like to get into .NET because if you ever need to learn another language like JavaScript, C++, or Java you will be a lot closer in syntax by learning C# originally. Furthermore, C# is more forgiving and easier to extend than all the other three languages I just mentioned.

If it is a choice, learn the .NET's from Microsoft. As you know, if you have kept up with Microsoft, you know that their Web Producing software will be a web based subscription service. It will readily use the .NET page programming. One of the things, if you are more into self-learning, self-taught, is to going to local computer supplier shows (like flee markets) and pick up those .NET packages you mentioned and start learning. The reason for the shows to buy them is:

1. You can make sure they are ligit, complete with COA. Usually no manuals with it, buy second source reference materials.

2. The packages are less expensive.

My opinion is C#, it's the flagship .Net language and has some features not found in others (like unsafe code). VB.Net is more English-like so it might be easier to learn though.

You could start by learning the basics of C# and then learn ASP.Net USING C#. You can learn them simultaneously or separate. Separately helped me.

C++/C# have been the most useful for me.
