Should Marco Andretti be headed to a Formula 1 team as test driver for a year or so with the idea of jumping into a full-time drive?

He did well in his Honda testing and he certainly can drive a road course. Perhaps he can do one more year of IRL while also testing in Europe for a team willing to take a chance. I would rather not see him go to Honda, although that seems to be the best bet right now. Maybe with Gil gone he can move on to a better second tier team. Williams or Red Bull? Can we see the Andretti name back at Ferrari? I doubt Mike would let him anywhere near Ron Dennis!

I think it is something the Andrettis are at least thinking about. Honda, of course, were impressed by Marco when he tested for the team in late 2006 and again in early 2007.

Autosport quoted him at the end of 2006 saying that he would finish out his IRL contract with Andretti-Green before going to F1. And his father has said he's only interested in seeing Marco get a seat in a top team.

Remember, Gil de Ferran left Honda in July, so he's not going to be helping Marco at Honda.

I think he'd do well to get over there and into GP2 next year so he can learn about life on the European circuit rather than trying to pull a stunt like his father did in 1993 (not testing, flying home ASAP after GPs so he could be in his house at bed time on Sunday night).

every team would love to have an american on their team and if the last name is andretti even better, but its a matter of timing, and we know being the best road corse driver in irl doesnt mean squat in formula 1, but my fingers are crossed

When a driver is offered to test in F1, they should check it out as a learning experience, but stay where they are and continue to develop their skills as drivers. Sometimes they push too early and in the process lose what confidence they had and become sloppy trying to regain what is lost. Alot of good drivers have had their careers in racing ruined this way.

Not such a great idea if you ask me. Marco hasn't had a strong enough year in IRL to think he'll be anything but a permenant test jockey in F1. If you'd asked me last year after his great rookie season I might have said yes, but the kid has had way too many DNFs this year.

i would rather see him at super aguri than honda to start off. then perhaps moving on from there, he could end up in ferrari, but until he starts driving in f1, we can't judge just yet.

If a team wants him to test, go for it.

If hes considered good enough, and is offered a ride (and if im Marco, at least shoot for a mid-level team at least), go for it, and while he is at it, see what his father did, and learn from it.
