LCD projectors hook to the VGA port on a PC, if it has USB it's for other functions. (Can also connect via composite video if you have it, or modern ones via DVI)

Progression is controlled by whatever software is running the presentation like powerpoint.

An infra-red mouse may help you in terms of how far you stand from your computer. In addition, many graphics adapters support two displays simultaneously.

If you need to see a screen different from what's projected, configure the projector as the second screen, use it to extend your computers standard screen, then drag the window (when sizable) where you are running your presentation to the projector, then maximize it. Now you can watch another windows on your standard screen.

If you need only look at one screen, you don't select the 'Extend your screen' option and the projector will show whatever's on your standard screen.
