do guppies only give birth through the day? apart from being fat what other signs are there that shes due?

shes really fat and looks like she is about the explode. will she have t6he babies through the night or another time of day? will she do anything noticable before,so that i know she is about to drop? how long does she usually take from start to finish? cheers david

I have breed guppies many times and from my experience they will give birth at anytime - though it is usually in the day. A few hours to a few days befor birth you may notice the female looking for a hiding place. Some females get more square in the back by the "spot". The only way to tell is by looking at her for a while then to see if she's acting diferently.

This is when some breeders put them into breeding nets so the fry aren't eaten by the others (but remove the mother after birth to if you use this method.) Normal birth is about 3-4 hours depending on litter size. larger litters take longer.

A better way for the fry is to not put the mother into a breeder net - use another tank that is exactly the same as the original tank(as close as can be to reduce stess). Another good way is to just have many place for the fry to hide. This way you don't have to worry about mom getting hungry for her young at night.

Note: most mothers do not eat for about 1 day after birth. Hormones released during birth cut back their appetite.

Well, mine always look like they swallowed a rectangle right before they pop.

Another thing is that she'll try to go off by herself a bit more. She won't eat as much and sometimes not at all. Occasionally I'll see her dart up and down (when contractions start) Her back will also start to bend like an upside down 'V'.

My females usually birth at night or whenever I leave the lights off. Some of my females drop really quickly, like an hour. Some stretch it over 3 hours. You'll know when she's done when she looks like her normal self again. She may be a little pale in color from the added stress, but that'll pick back up in a few days.

I've also noticed that increasing the aquarium salt helps them deliver sooner and quicker.

I don't keep live bearers now but from my experience they give birth at any time of the day or night

As far as signs of imminent birth are concerened, I could never predict when it was going to happen with any certainty and the female was often blown up like a barriage balloon for days before dropping them

As for the time, they usually drop their fry early mornings or early evenings, sometimes even during the day
It takes anywhere from 1-4 hours for her to drop her fry

it can take anything from 1-6 hours depending on the breed of the dog and how many pups she has, and NO they dont just give birth in the daytrime.
she'll start looking for someplace nice to have them and may start 'bedmaking' get the emergency number of your vet, incase something does go wrong, ( last whelping ***** I had I lost and I been breeding for years)
