When we finally start to see advertising aimed at LGBT individuals outside of media that supports us? What I'm saying is when you can turn on Fox news and see a condom commercial aimed at gay guys, for example. I think it would speak loads on the way peoples feelings have changed in relation to LGBT individuals.

I watch Logo on occasion and you can guarantee I pay attention to who is advertising there.

btw, has everyone seen the commercial where the guy is pulling up his jeans and the street comes up through his floor and there is a lady in the phone booth? Have you seen the one that airs on Logo? :)

It truly would be a good day when we get fair representation regardless of media. Be careful what we wish for. There are lots of campaigns for various businesses targeting the LGBTQ community throughout the country. We see increasing corporate sponsorships in pride festivals and other LGBTQ community-based events. While it's great to have the financial backings of larger corporations so these community events don't have to make every penny count, it does come at a price. The price of being marketed to.

It is estimated that the LGBTQ market in the US alone is worth somewhere between 300 - 360 billion dollars. Yes, this is billion with a capitol B. We do have larger buying power and are seen for our mighty gay dollars. Are we just a segment of society that is just waiting to be marketed to? Or are we individuals?

While it is great that we have increased visibility and people want to market to our community, I couldn't help but to think of the old adage that everything has a price tag, including us. I just don't want us to be seen as just the mighty gay dollar, but as a community who has fought for our visibility and now for our equality.

Be alert of who is marketing to us. Be aware of where our hard earned dollar we spent on particular business is going. I raised a question a few days ago about if we should patronize businesses that are homophobia. It is still open and I would like to hear what your thoughts are.

Yep. It made me feel good to see a Gay version of the Levi commercial when the guy pulls up his pants and the street comes up too. The whole problem is that it was on Logo and not other major channels. I mean off course logo would have it.

Also, I would like to see bisexuality portrayed in a way other that a fantasy for a straight dude.

Yeah, it will. I've only seen a handful of ads on mainstream TV featuring individuals that we know are gay, except blackface-type caricatures, versus a zillion mattress, cereal, and cleaning product commercials featuring straight couples. It is encouraging to see a growing number of such ads on LOGO; it takes a lot of guts for companies like Levi's and Subaru to not only advertise there but produce "gay" ads that they know may end up as part of marketing tools for the hate groups. I think the absence of any concerted backlash will cause more companies to step forward; the Bible-thumpers can't boycott everyone.

Yes, it will mean that there is a realization that markets are not 100% straight, 100% male, 100% female, 100% macho, 100% feminine, or any other extreme.

You'd think that with all the disposable income that some LGBT couples have, advertisers would wise up. You'd think.

p.s. You will NEVER see anything remotely supportive of LGBT people on Fox News. Murdoch's and O'Reilly's heads would explode.

Yeah, it kind of turns my stomach to see a commercial with beautiful women in a bar full of pigs and condoms, and THAT is okay to some people.
We DO have the power to change that!
We should protest, and I am dead serious!
We are consumers also, and maybe we should stand together on this one.
JIHAD !!!!!!!

EDIT- wouldnt it be a good day if we could see LOGO on basic cable???? That would mean that things are changing.

Hey Jake,
why is it that mainstream finds commericals sexy girls coming through the floor while a guy pulls up his pants. so why then can't str8 people except commerical the are aimed towards the gay community? It is no different then tampon, underwear comerricals. It would be a great day when I know I won't have to worry so much for my child who is gay. what happened to equal rights and the admendments.

I would not want to watch Fox even if they had gay male condom advertising. I think the bigger issue is the over consumerism of society. Why should I have to endure someone telling me I have to buy this product if I want to be loved/successful/happy? When all I want to do is watch the news or be entertained. In fact, buying needless crap usually makes me feel un-loved/un-successful/sad!!!

It seems I have seen a commercial for gays. Didn't Travelocity or some such outfit do a whole series for gays?

But no mainstream commercials yet, that I know of. Give them time. It's only been a few years since Blacks discovered that they can have bad breath, too!

You do see that type of advertising in gay or gay friendly clubs and restaurants. But it would definitely be nice to see it in the mainstream. It would be nicer still if it didn't necessarily have to be a condom ad, since already str8 people think all we do is ummmm fork.....
