Definitely! I don't see why a male and female cannot be best of friends. I have got quite a few opposite sexes who were merely my good friends.
Sometimes, you don't have to upgrade your friendship into a relationship even if you like the friend cos having him/her as a friend is eternal.

of course they can. another thing is that a young boy and a girl are just friends but as they are curious about the other sex, they start to have "experiences" with each other
