One of the main reasons that people run from their mistakes is the inability to cope with it. Oftentimes, if confronted about it, the person will take responsibility. The key to overcoming any problem that may be encountered due to poor judgement is constructive critisism and support.

If you are going to bring up a mistake to the offender, stay calm, don't belittle them and have a valid solution to fix the problem.

Thomas Jefferson made the comment:
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. "
The person in question may have just found a way that won't work.

In my experiences working with clients, it is easier at the moment to run from the situation vs. facing the situation. In the longrun, though, the past will catch up, and an apology will be said eventually.

from a purely psychology standpoint:

flight, fright, fight. most people follow the fright path (goosebumps, nervousness, loss of all reason... etc.etc.)

flight is the second most common. they choose to avoi the situation because they fear it.

it takes time for the higher brain functions to regain control and do the correct and safe things.
