I also have a 2002 Envoy. I have a similar problem, except that my outside temperature sensor will say that it is as low as -33 degrees, at which time, the A/C starts blowing hot air to attempt to get the car to the set temp of 60 degrees. This is extremely unpleasant as we have been having highs in the mid to high 90's here in Florida. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it will go down to 50 degrees and stop and at least once a day it will go down to the dreaded -33.

Clean the condenser coil, it's the one in front of the radiator. Also make sure your fan is running at all times when the ac is on. Your system is shutting down for high discharge pressure, and recharging and replacing the compressor will not solve the problem. Go to somewhere like Home Depot or Lowe's and get a gallon on condenser cleaner and a garden sprayer. Mix per instructions and soak the coil, then rinse with clear water, and repeat until water runs clear. If the fan isn't running when you turn the ac on, it will cause the same problem. If you have a belt driven fan, check the tension of the belt. Get a new ac shop, that one is ripping you off big time. Turn them in to the BBB. They need to be put out of business.

I have a similar problem; however it really does not have anything to do with the outside temperature. Under the hood you have a fuse/relay box; using your owners manual find the relay that is for you’re a/c, there is also a couple other relays that are identical. Next time it starts blowing hot air exchange the one for the A/C with one of the others. This usually does the trick for mine; if in fact this does help you I suggest you replace the A/C relay with a new one. Make sure to turn off your vehicle first.

Well I know my compressor is going out and I hear an intermittant sound from it like a light grinding sound. So i'd try to listen for an odd sound coming from the engine compartment when it stops working if there is one it was the compressor the whole time and they took you to the cleaners. I suggest finding a new shop.

Its an aftermarket switch that the nicer package has. The purpose is to keep the economy flowing with the car market having lots of sales. bring it to a ford dealer and let them sell you a real vehicle. You can use the envoy as a decoration in your rock garden

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.
TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

i would guess it has more to do with the underhood temps and general cooling system issues than outside air temps. it may have a hi pressue cutout switch that is weak or a restriction in the condensor

You may not be aware there are 16 recalls on this model vehicle. I think the dealer or mechanic should have informed you of them. #9 & 13 may be related to you.
