I would like to hear from people who are in an open relationship about how it works and if they recommend it.

Just to add some detail. I am not married. I am in a serious relationship and am just curious about the practice of open relationships. If you are not in one or have not been in one, then you really cannot answer this question as it is asked.

Crazy8eddie is right on with his answer. I have been in a open relationship for years. Trust and honest are the two main things that will make it work. If I don't like someone my husband is with or he doesn't like someone that I am with then we don't see them again. It does take a lot of trust.
It can work if the marriage is strong before the open relationship starts. If you are already having problems then it will not work.

It only works when:
1. Both parties are truly, honestly open with each other,
2. They are totally secure with each other,
3. There is no jealousy, and
4. There is no guilt about social mores.
all of which means it rarely works..

my little sister and her husband tried that it ended in divorce, and a year after the divorce they have since gotten re married after they worked through their issues, i think an "open" marriage is the most stupid idea i've heard of, either you are married or you aren't

There is no such thing as an open marriage. IT's called cheating and why even bother being married. Open marriages are a good way to catch a disease. Not worth it.

i know somebody in one. it works until one or the other partners starts being hypocritical about it. then it just gets to being one person being promiscuous and the other being faithfull
