No one is "entitled" to welfare. Welfare is anything but Well and Fair. It keeps the poor, poor, and the middle class paying to keep them poor. As far as homeless people, they are only homeless if they chose to be, there is a church in every city, that takes in people, instead of going for the Mad Dog 20-20, maybe they should walk into a church instead.

We waste so much money on our welfare system by not tracking the people who use it. Why not monitor the recipients better by helping them get jobs or educate them to hold a job. We can manage this system so much better. So yes the homeless should be entitled to welfare as long as they are monitored and educated to use it wisely. Instead of giving welfare money for years, send them to school and cut them off after, say 2 years. That can save the system money in the long run. Oh and why not stop spending Trillions of Dollars on a pointless war where people are dying, and help some people live!!

Most of those on the street are the mentally ill. A group of people that have been thrown into the streets. Our mental health system has been reduced to drug pushing. some of the deadliest drugs out there are psych meds. They need more than drugs and welfare. many of them don't even understand what welfare is. Then we have the terminal alcoholics and drug addicts. These are illnesses also. But try to get the average person to understand this. They are too busy being judgemental. In answer to your question they need so much more than welfare. Right on wyldfyr. I think you and I are the only people that know this.

It was Reagan not "commie socialist lawyers" that put mentally ill on the streets. Welfare was reformed in the 90s so that able bodied people must work or be cut off from welfare. Though many homeless people would qualify as disabled the fact that they were put out on the streets to fend for themselves in the eighties and have no advocates to help them, many "fall through the cracks".

Not necessarily...as much as people on this site like to act like we spend more than 1% of the budget on welfare, we don't. And you have to qualify for it...able bodied people do not qualify for welfare. There is also a 5 year non consecutive cap on it, so many have exhausted that resource. And finally, many privately run shelters do not allow drugs or alcohol, and many people are on the streets because of drugs or alcohol...many are veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or are otherwise mentally unstable...with no help available through hospitals, etc...many are uninsured and cannot afford to pay for healthcare, while others are simply denied benefits from the for profit insurance companies (who are required by law to maximize profits for their shareholders...by not paying out benefits). There are so many issues surrounding why we have so many homeless, hungry children, and third word infant mortality rates...in the richest country in the world.

In many cases no. They have already gone past that and they are in need of people like you that are showing concern about their well being. Set aside for a minute the alcoholics, drug addicts, and mentally challenged individuals that have slipped threw that cracks. Many people in this country are one pay check away from ending up on the streets. Basic health care and education are needs that must be met and when this next election comes around look for the candidate that addresses these issues. It all starts at your local level and it maybe up to you to say " Hey what is going on here?" I wish you the best and hope you like myself are trying to make a difference, God speed and God bless.

You have to have a physical address to recieve any sort of "welfare"-which btw, isn't just a check. It is food stamps and or T.E.A. emergency money and in Arkansas I think it is like $200 per month. Sometimes single parents get a little more -if they aren't recieving child support.
So, basically that is why there are that many homeless people.

The overarching reason for welfare is to reduce the crime rate. Turns out that providing welfare to destitute individuals is much less expensive than providing a much much larger police force and judiciary.
About 16 cents of every welfare dollar goes to presumably needy individuals. Currently about 54 cents goes to big businesses and the other 20 cents is eaten up in administrative costs.

Most of these people are mentally ill or drug addicted. Most of them don't have addresses. I'm not sure how welfare would help them. Institutionalizing them would be the most humane way to help them. They could be evaluated to determine if they need medical or mental assistance. If they refuse this, let 'em be. As long as they don't break any laws they should be able to live as they want.
