Prime Minister Olmert of Israel has a 3% approval rating (and that's being generous with a +/- rating of 3%) and is under investigation for several jail worthy criminal activities and refusing to step down from power. Bush hovers around a 30% approval rating on any given day. 1 out of 3 people approving of the job of the leader is bad, but much better than 3 out of 100. What should a democracy do when its government refuses to represent the views of the people and engages in criminal behavior usually at the expense of its own people and against its own people?

Smile . .. . . Uhhhh , do you realize that Congress , Democratic controlled Congress has a 3% approval rating on their handling of the war in Iraq ? Yep , check Zogby's latest poll . I believe it's dated 8-1-07 or very close to that .

Re: Your titled question .. . . . . The answer can be found at the voting booths . Or , if a leader has broken laws then impeachment is possible (although I do not know Israel's laws and processes, but do you ?)
Criminal behavior ? . . . . . I didn't see you post any examples .

But I think you're implying drastic action . And if so , then what do you suggest we do about the Democratically controlled Congress and their 3% approval rating on the handling of the Iraq war ?

What should a democracy do?

Simple.

Follow the rules.

Unless a country/state/municipality has a recall option (most do not, including Israel, and those that do rarely exercise it) then the only recourse is to wait until a) an election is called b) the people in power come to term or c) vote of non confidence (only possible with minority governments of which Israel usually is).

The constitution has taken care of that for us in terms of term limits and articles and impeachment.

I think we heard all this back in, say, Nov 2004.
