Some states have a "transition to teaching" program. You begin work and they help you take the bare minimum of classes to get certification. This is due to the nationwide shortage of teachers. At our school we had a drama major get her masters in special ed in 2 years while teaching and raising a family! Contact you local board of education for details.

As other have already said...it will differ from state to state. Your best bet is to go to your state's website.

However, I think you should know that there is NO shortage of teachers...that is a huge public misconception. In fact, it is quite the opposite...baby boomers are not retiring in the numbers that were originally expected and many people are switching careers and looking into teaching as a more fulfilling career and lifestyle choice.

For this reason there can be as many as 500-100 applicants applying for one teaching position.

I am not trying to scare you away here...just thought you should know the reality of the situation.

Once you have decided to become a teacher, I strongly recommend you read all the articles on this site: http://www.TeacherInterviewTips.com/teacher_interview_articles.htm

These articles will help you stand out amongst the competition.

Good Luck!!

It really depends on the classes you already took and when. Some of them may be used towards your teaching degree requirements. It also depends on the institution that you are going back to. For someone without any college credits, it takes 4 years. I would suggest you try to substitute teach for a while first to see if it is worth it to you. That's what I did before I switched my program of study from accounting to education.
