Carrie, just like a first love, will forever stand apart from the rest. But i find myself preferring King's shorter novels (eg Firestarter, The Running Man, Roadwork), his milder works (eg The Green Mile, Hearts in Atlantis, Eyes of the Dragon), and his short stories from different anthologies, of which i like Nightmares and Dreamscapes most.

Some of his better-acclaimed novels (eg The Shining, Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot) dont seem to have the punch that holds my attention, with exception of The Stand. Dreamcatcher spooked me out so much i never finished it. The likes of The Talisman, The Tommyknockers, The Regulators etc somehow turned me off. Others (eg Cujo, Dolores Clairborne, Needful Things) just dont come to mind when thinking of King's works that are particularly memorable for me.

Havent gotten around to his series, nor had the chance to pick up Cell or Lisey's Story yet, but i have to agree with PatriotWhit that his older works are better. However, i would have to point out that "favourite" differs greatly from "best".

If you are still reading, id be interested in hearing what you think of King's work. im well aware i sound like a brag, rattling off titles, but i hope it gives a sort of backgrounder to my choice of favourite. Its an odd choice but it would be a toss-up between The Long Walk and Misery.

OK people....whats wrong with ya? Stephen's best book by far is "The Stand" He says its not his fave, but generally the publics. I also really loved Insomnia, IT, and The Dead Zone. However, Christine was an excellent read back in the day as was Cujo and Salems Lot.
I don't care much for his writing over the last ten years or so, however CELL was back to good old Stephen.
ok there's my two cents worth.

P.S. To John M. who said Shawsahnk.....ummmmm that was a story out of a book of short stories (4 actually) and while an excellent story and a most excellent movie...it doesnt actually constitute a "book"

geesh whats my problem?

smiles :)

Rose Madder. I think I was the only one that liked that book. I like all of them for the most part, particularly The Shining, Carrie and Salem's Lot.

The Green Mile. I got to know the characters so well that I hated percy and pitied J.C.
