As long as you pay on time. It certainly won't hurt it.

Most landlords don't report your payment history because they don't know how and there's a cost involved. You could get the reporting form, fill it out, ask the landlord to sign it, and pay whatever the fee is to a credit bureau to file it-- it won't be expensive. Let him know that you are trying hard to improve your score and ask his help so that you can accomplish your goal. I own rentals and I would certainly do this if I was asked.
It WILL help your score to open a credit account (credit card), pay it off each month, and keep it for a long time. Get one without a monthly fee. Start with a secured card if you don't yet qualify for a non-secured card.
If you would like detailed info about what affects your credit score and how to improve it, here's info on my site: http://www.steverumberg.com/index.php?p=re2/infoctr/i_credit_scores.php
Good luck!

Your rental history will only help your credit rating if your LL reports it to the credit bureaus. Most LLs don't report rental history to them due to the cost of filing the reports.

monthly rent payments are not reported to the credit agencies.
evictions, bankrupticies and foreclosures are reported.
so one year without any of those will look good.
good luck :)
