The snake will most likely be coiled up when you go to pick it up. Slide your hands under the coils and lift it up. Just make sure that you support the thickest part of its body with both hands and try to rest the body along your forearms when you carry it. Snakes have a lot of fragile ribs and vertebrae that can get damaged if you handle them incorrectly.

If the snake is an older one and is thicker than a large apple, then get another person to help you support the weight.

Most zoos have a strict policy that any heavy-bodied snake over 6 feet long MUST be handled by at least two people to protect the snake and the keepers.

I think you will find that a 7' boa is going to be too heavy for you to pick up safely alone unless it is in a tub or bag.

The general process is going to be for the head keeper to control the head of the snake and the overall lift. Grip the head area firmly enough to control the snake without hurting it, then begin to move the snake to a safe lifting position.

Your assistant will lift the bulk of the weight and control the tail. By controlling the head and tail, you minimize the risk that the snake will be able to get a good wrap going on anyone's neck- and that is a real concern! A snake this big can choke you enough to make you pass out before you know what is happening!

Now- another option is to 'herd' it into a transport tub or bag. That can take a while if it is stubborn, but it can be good option. Some snakes do best if you guide the head in and just sort of 'ease' the rest of the body along. Others do best if you drop their tails in.

obviously you should not be near this animal -- as others here have said general policy is to have 2 experienced people to handle a large boid over 6 feet - unless you want us to be reading about you in the "darwin awards" you should be listening to what we are saying - start off with something really small and work you way up to a larger animal if you really want to get into herping.

-sigh- If you don't even know how to handle a large snake then you DEFINATELY shouldn't be buying one. Seriously, reconsider whatever deal it is you've made.

Secondly: if the snake is over 6 ft you should ALWAYS have another person present when you handle/let it out. Don't attempt to handle it by yourself!

Seriously, if you don't know what your doing, don't do it! >.<
