The belt might be stretched or the tensioner may need to be adjusted.

The belt has probably stretched. You might be able to adjust the tensioner and get it to last a little longer, but if it is slipping off on its own chances are very high that it needs replaced.

There are different grades of belts. Make sure to get a good grade. Some cheaper belts stretch more easily and won't last nearly as long even though they are the same style (angle, width, and length) as your orginal.

Take your belt off...take it in to your local sales and service dealer ( located in yellow pages under gasoline engines)..they will have a replacement...also, napa carries the Kevlar belts...(well worth the money)..chances are...your belt is worn out..but, be sure and take the numbers off of the deck with you and the type of riding mower it is...one thing to keep in mind..you keep putting these under a stress or high load..you will have these problems..while you can adjust your tensioner...I truly doubt that will serve your long time problem..know they are a pain...but, if you get the Kevlar belts..they are well worth the money...make sure you don't have any other problem, such as guides and what have you....look for the simple things first....

Any smoke when it does this? a lean running engine can run good for few..... then dround out (of course no black smoke, its running lean) And a rich engine can run good then all of a sudden get a load of gas puff black smoke. Sorta sounds like the engine isn't getting gas to the carb, in a steady supply...... in other words the gas gets there very slow..... take the fuel line off at the carb, let it go real quick and watch for a fast and steady flow to see if this is the case.... usually it can be a non venting gas cap, or clogged fuel filter (some tanks have a mesh screen at the outlet as well)

You need to tighten the tension, There should be a idler wheel that needs to be adjusted to keep the belt on.

If there are 2 belts on the drive please change them both at the same time. They probably all went on at the same time and who wants to do that job two times?
