My friend is 32, married, mother of two. She says she's a Republican and always votes for Republicans.
However, she relies on many Democrat-backed social programs, and complains that there aren't better schools, more state-funded programs, city parks, etc.
What can I say to help her realize that voting Republican is against everything she wants?

She can't defend her position as a Republican. She says "It's just the right thing to do."

And yes, there is a difference between being a Democrat and a Liberal.

That's the biggest problem the party faces today (and the strength of the GOP). They get Democrats to vote against their own interests by convincing them that they are Republicans.
Ask her why she is Republican, specifically what do Republicans stand for that she agrees with?
Push her on it..."Why is it the right thing to do? I want to agree with you but I need to know why it's the right thing to do. What do they stand for that is right"?
Probably a good chance that she's anti-gay or anti-choice and doesn't want to admit it because she's knows she's prejudice. Most people like this would rather vote "against" a group than vote for her own self interests.

My husband is the one that told me I was a liberal. I thought I was a moderate. I'm a registered Independent. He asked me a series of questions. Like, do you believe the disadvantage, poor and hungry should be given a hand up. Which I replied yes too. I can't remember the other questions. But when it was done he said darling you are a liberal. Well I still am not sure I embrace it. The point is you can show her. It just may take awhile for her to understand.

She needs to be challenged to defend why she's a Republican. Perhaps she might be made to see that they're using hot button issues to get her to vote against her own interests.
And it's a lot of baloney, usually. One big way the Republicans troll for votes is by running against "Hollywood". But Hollywood is a business. The GOP is a willing lapdog for business, including Hollywood. They get a lot of money from studio execs, and there are more Republican actors than they let on! So they'll never do anything about the "sleaze" and "filth" they like to complain about. Plus there's this little thing called the First Amendment.
Identify what the "hooks" are that they used to net your friend. Then help her see it's a scam.

I have a friend like this also, she is a Christian and she is convinced that if you are a Christian you have to vote for the Republicans because of abortion. I tell her if she is really pro life she can't vote Republican just look at Iraq. But she is convinced like so many Christians that were deceived by the RNC and refuse to look at the facts.

Do you live in the South? If so it's hopeless. I live down here and many people who are Democrats on pretty much every issue vote Republican simply because of Gun Control, Abortion and/or Stem Cell research.
Those issues seem to be more important to them than everything else combined.

Ask her if she's Pro-choice or Pro-life.
Ask her if she's for increased taxes or decreased taxes.
Ask her if she for big government or reduced government.
Ask her if she want's open borders or secure borders.
Those are some of the bigger ones. If she wants the former, she's a democrat, if the latter, she's a republican.
Not that the republicans have done much good in the past few years, but the ideal is still there.

I have a mother in law like that. But she is a democrat and will admit it, but if you call her a liberal, all hell breaks loose. Most people live in denial and there is probably nothing you can say to change that.

The are many GOP voters that rely on social programs. Most of them are just down on their luck and need a crutch before they get back on their feet. That is what the social programs are for. A crutch, not a permanent support.
