The fact is, it isn't a good idea to have any sort of wage restrictions. This is in clear violation of a free market. By forcing employers to pay employees a certain wage will only cause inflation.

The minimum wage is a sham.
It is an average and has no baring on places such as some backwater town in Mississippi as opposed to Manhattan.
Minimum wage should be based on regional cost of living and a living wage.
It could be in that backwater town that someone could get by on $3 an hour, whereas in San Francisco, a living wage is over $20 an hour.

Because evertime they try it gets blocked by the GOP in congress. And if it ever did pass the congress and senate the president would veto the bill. That's what the GOP considers being a compassionate government. And Ken, it was raised 40% but it will only increase 40% over the next 2 years. Minimum wage is now at $5.85 an hour, try living on that. Starting July 24th 2008 it will go to $6.55 an hour, try living on that. Starting July 24th 2009 it will be $7.25 an hour, still not enough to live on even at todays prices so how would a person be able to live on $7.25 2 years from now?

Because increasing it substantially would put many businesses into bankruptcy, which would cause widespread unemployment.
It is not unreasonable for there to be laws safeguarding against paying workers a wage that condemns them to being a permanent slave class.
And nine years without a raise in the minimum wage was unconscionable. How many other jobs didn't get a raise in nine years?

The idea is that you want to reach a balance of a wage that people can live on and one that isn't so high that businesses can't pay it. In Washington (highest minimum wage in the country) it is $7.90 I think. For the economy in this state, it is a good number, and can be seen by the continuing good economy.

Do you realize that the vast majority of workers in this country make less in real wages than they did 10,20,even 30 nad more years ago?
Why do you think that is?
Could it be because the corporations the right like to pretend are the greatest thing to ever happen to America, have systematically destroyed worker's rights in this country?
Outsourcing jobs in all sectors, using that outsourcing as a club to beat workers into submissiveness, paying CEO's hundreds the amount as their workers, and on and on.
To make as much as a 1980 minimum wage worker who made $3.15,you would have to make 9.78.
So what's the point you're trying to make?
That you're another right-wing sheeple?
If so,you've accomplished your goal.

Because Congress (you notice I didn't say specific parties) hasn't tried to live on minimum wage. Boy, wouldn't that be interesting to watch them try.

It's simple, really.
Increasing minimum wage is a good idea politically because it gets votes.
Increasing it too much would expose the flaw in the logic that concludes it is a good idea for economic reasons, and that would be a bad idea politically.

Because raising it substantially all at once would have serious negative side effects on businesses and the economy.
