Yeah my twins had the same exact problem..it was rediculous...either deal with their SEVERE spit up problem and the crying from the GERD or have them crying because it hurts to poop!
Dont worry girl I have the cure! You can even call and talk to you pediatricians nurse..im sure they will agree.
Here it is...
1 teaspoon of prune juice per ounce of formula and mix it right in the bottle. It will be purple and weird looking, but they drink it and I couldnt give my babies straight juice for one their ped doesnt want them to have juice, but when they did try it they SCREAMED for hours because their bellies hurt, but it doesnt when you just mix a little in with their formula. It worked like a charm. And just do it as often as is needed..do it every bottle until they soften up a little bit, and then just once or twice a day.
Dont do oatmeal..no it doesnt work! Oh and I dont know how much rice cereal you are using, but it should be also a teaspoon per ounce.

"Her doctor is concerned, and told me that I needed to stop breastfeeding because sometimes babies just lose weight if they breastfeed too long. Is there any validity to that statement?" Not really, no. She wouldn't lose weight simply because she's breastfeeding "too long". It's most likely the stomach virus more than anything else. She probably would have lost weight regardless of whether or not she was breastfeeding. It's not unusual for a child her age to lose some when they're sick. Unfortunately, a lot of doctors are very misinformed when it comes to breastfeeding. Nursing her through that illness was the best thing you could have done for her. Breastmilk has a great balance of fats, antibodies, electrolytes, and micronutrients (and more!). It's gentle on her digestive system and well absorbed, so she'll stay better hydrated when she's ill. I say well done, mama.

I had the same problem with my son, I ran out of rice cereal for in his bottle and tried the baby oatmeal in there instead, it gets way to thick to use, they can not suck it out from the bottle. I suggest you talk to the doctor about switching your baby's formula to a different kind. There is a brand that is made just for AR in infants.

It depends on her age. They have a better chance of an allergic reaction before 6 mo with oatmeal, that's why rice is usually recommended. I would definately ask your doctor.

Oatmeal makes bowel movements easier, she'll get more regular in her bowel movements, but always feed it to her in the morning only. Not at night, so you dont have any smelly surprises at 2 in the morning.

baby rice not regular rice.
i only say this because my stepdaughter tried giving her baby regular rice. she didn't know there is baby rice.
if you decide to go with oatmeal make sure it's baby oatmeal, too. grind it before you mix it with the milk or formula.
