what do you think is the best best for a 12-13 year old?

Depends on the responsibility level of the kid.

Bearded dragons are very cool, they don't grow as big as an iguana, and they don't mind being handled as much as most
lizards seem to. You have to read everything about them though, they need good care.

Cockatiels are good but it takes time & patience to handle them.

Any pet you have requires commitment- you can't just get bored with a living thing and stop caring for it.

If you are thinking about a dog, the best kind of dog for a young child is a labrador retriever, but a puppy would be best so that the dog can grow up with the child. A kitten would be good too, cuz they are cute and cuddly, and if you train them right, you shouldn't have a problem with them going to the bathroom in the proper place, but cats stink up a house, even if you regularly clean the cat litter pan, cuz they spray, so a puppy would probably be the best.

well i'm 13..but if u want something easy than consider something that lives in a cage and doesn't need much caring for.Like maybe a lil turtle.Or some fish. But if u think u can handle the responsibility than i say get a puppy. And if so get a boxer.why??? because
1.they make great family pets
2.get along well with others
3.they do need exercise but very lil grooming
4.i've had one and its not badd
u just allways have to keep an eye on them
here's a link on some useful info on the Boxer[dog]
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/boxer.htm
thats some stuff you'd need to know if u ever consider one :D
good luck and have fun! bye
ps.u were by first question i answered! bye

There so much more to consider than just age! But a mature 12 or 13 yo should be about to take responsibility for any small domestic pet (cats, dogs, hamsters, fish, etc.) It just depends on the desires of the said pre-teen.

If you must..then get a cat. They require less attention than a dog and the only real maintainance is the litter box.. Don't expect ANY kid that age to be totally responsible for any pet unless it is a chore they have grown up with.
Small caged animals may be cute but stink terrribly when the cage is not KEPT clean (several times a week). They may seem fun at first but children usually get bored quickly with anything in a cage.
Good luck in whatever you choose but be prepared to take over caring for it.

A dog.
12-13 year olds are very active at that age.
And if you pick the right one they can take care of one another.

A cat. They are low maintenance. A 12-13 year old isn't going to want to walk a dog every day.

usually a small hamster or guinea is always a good choice you dont have to much work to do with them their easy to clean and it teaches great responsibility skills. they have to clean it and always wash their hands before they play with it. or the always easy to get along with cat. they are great companions and live quiet a long time so it would be a pet cherrished for sometime. but cleaning the litter box might be an issue with a 12-13 yr old

Depends, I'd say a cat- not kitten but a cat that has a few years to his name. Probably mellow, independent, and relatively easy to take care of. However, the litter cleaning may be difficult to get a child to do.
