The US Copyright office has a form you fill out, and pay a fee to get your work protected. It's currently $45 to get a work copyrighted.

Mailing it to yourself only proves that you had a copy of it at on a certain date, not that you were necessarily the author of it. Better to fill out the form and make it official.

According to the United States Copyright Office: Copyright.gov

Your work is copyrighted from the minute you write it.

You can also use the traditional © 2007.

Nothing else, according, to popular belief is necessary.

You will, of course, keep a copy of your work for your files.

Although most people just put the copyright mark after what ever their widget is its not a legal copyright. If you want to make sure no one can claim your idea go here: http://www.onestopcopyrighting.com/
Hope that helps.
