A few government regulations exist today to control the drug industry and, to some degree, the medical providers. Almost nothing is in place to curb insurance company rates.

A combined and cooperative effort between private industry, the medical providers and insurance companies, and the government can be done. There would be an umbrella agency that would regulate prices, costs and malpractice awards etc. This team would look for ways to reduce costs to the consumer while providing quality health care to all, yet allowing the insurance companies, drug companies, and for profit medical providers to make a small and reasonable profit. Treatment must be based on a physician or other doctor's order and not controlled by bureaucrats or insurance company reps.

Cost would be shared by the government and the consumer. Those unable or less able to pay would pay less and those more able to pay would pay more into the system. I also would have everyone paying some sort of premium and copay albeit only a few dollars for the lowest income people and much more for those better able to afford it. Eventually those at the top will be retired and will need medical care. They will not be able to afford all their health care costs and someone else will be paying for them as they pay for others now.

Currently there is NO role for them. Or at least they choose not to take a role in it.

They are supposed to regulate it and make sure that there is no price gouging, discrimination and malpractice. I would think they would also take some interest in the premiums the insurance companies charge, considering that the higher they charge, the more that apply and receive government assistance.

The government's current role in health care is limited to that of an oversight organization. You are familiar with the FDA whose purpose is to protect us from harmful drugs by reviewing research data presented by drug companies before release to the public. WE ALL KNOW HOW SUCCESSFUL THEY HAVE BEEN.

Additionally they supply matching funds for hospital building with the hospital agreeing to provide a certain amount of free helth care to those in need. WE SEE HOW SUCCESSFUL THAT HAS BEEN WITH HOSPITALS CLOSING BECAUSE OF EXCESS CARE GIVEN TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

The third role of government in health care is to provide emergency services in times of disaster. SOME OF US THAT LIVED THROUGH KATRINA CAN ATTEST TO THEIR SUCCESS ON IN THIS AREA.

A better question is what should their future role in health care be. The problems we have seen by their current involvement is because they have no responsibilities. They oversee a private industry who over charges and when government is involved gives substandard care because the governemnet will not pay their inflated prices. If they were responsible for national health care taking it away from private industry, their involvement would be one citizens can hold them accountable for. The current system only allows for finger pointing to each other. Life expectency in other countries that provide national health care are higher than the US; it obviously can work.
