France didn't win anything but got crushed during WW2? They also hold other monuments like Nepoleon's monuments etc... This nation seems to have monuments of victory commemorating events of their losses! Noticed that?

The Arc Is The French Way Of Remembering There War Dead Much The Same Way that We Remember Ours

Do you think that the Coliseum was put in Italy as a tourist attraction! The Arc de Triomphe was built by Napoleon to commemorate his victories (which were numerous). France may have been beaten in WW2, but do you think they are going to take down a national monument! If you went to history class and paid attention for 25% of the time you would know that there have been many wars for thousands of years!

Great Napoleonic victories, and then even greater Napoleonic defeats. Defeats in 1870 against Prussia, defeats followed the mutiny in 1917, the
Vichy Government followed by a drubbing in Indo-China.

It's all a matter of 'La Gloire'. Every Frenchman was a member of the resistance and the proud blood and spirit of Rene Artois runs through every vein. Read this very carefully I shall write this only wernce.... Vive Galoise, vive garlic, vive collaberation, vive La France.....and of course Charles de Gaulle !!!

I think you may have a point.

le Arc de Triumphe commemorates the victories of Napolean ... the last French leader who actually had any in the continuing series of European wars.

That he was a dictator does not seem to matter, even to the supporters of the French Republic. Go figure.

The arch honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars, and today also includes the tomb of the unknown soldier.

if you really knew any history you would understand the Arc has been there since the early eighteen hundreds.

The Arc de Triomphe is a memorial to fallen French soldiers. Are you trying to suggest the French shouldn't honour their war dead unless they won the war?

If you're American, going by that logic then you presumably wont be erecting any monuments to the soldiers killed in Iraq, or Vietnam for that matter?

If your British then presumably wont erect any for those killed in Afghanistan?

Napolean conquered quite a bit of the western world, give or take an island with a frustrating moat around it. Let people enjoy their history, for heaven's sake.
