If he were, people of the time would consider it none of their business. At the time of his assasination, people would be aware of the existence of sodomy (having read the Bible), but they would have no concept, or word for a personality organized around what was then considered a perversion of sexual behavior.

From the Wikipedia article, "Homosexuality":

In the "last two decades of the 19th century, a new view began to emerge in medical and psychiatric circles, judging such behavior as indicative of a type of person with a defined and relatively stable sexual orientation. Karl-Maria Kertbeny coined the term homosexual in 1869 in a pamphlet arguing against a Prussian anti-sodomy law.[4][5] Richard von Krafft-Ebing's 1886 book Psychopathia Sexualis elaborated on the concept.[5]"

I've heard that rumor too, actually. From what I've heard historians say, Lincoln had a higher-toned voice than other men, and that was one of the things that made people wonder that about him.

Lincoln lived during an era when it was not a common practice to flaunt homosexuality as though it was an important part of a person's character.

So, who knows and...who cares.

On the whole yes, he was a fairly happy man.

It's only in recent history that "gay" changed its meaning from something nice (bright and cheerful) to something nasty.
