I tried to get it to turn back on for hours but it would show the blue screen after it loads when you first turn it on. After hours of playing around with I got it to turn by removing one of the sticks of ram. It works with one piece of ram but not with both. I tried switching them and it will work with one or the other but not both. I haven't changed anything on this laptop recently. Its a toshiba satellite pro m14-s405 and it has windoes xp pro on it.

Sounds to me like you have already done a great job in tracing down your problem. From your description, I would bet that one of your memory slots has gone bad. Not much to do here but replace the mother board. This is not usually a do it yourself project in a Laptop. It can be done but it will be tricky at best. A good repair shop should be able to do it within an hour. Two at the most. So don't let them tack on extra labor.

Good luck.

It sounds like it suffered from an improper shut down. Usually these sorts of shut downs are benign, but the reason it is not recommended is because of what happened to you.

A hard boot can fry a lot more that 1 stick. I seems like a corrupt code is on both sticks. With only one the code is incomplete.

This happened to me, and I learned many years ago not to go onto improper or untrusted sites.

See if it will come up in safe mode, when you see the Windows splash screen, hit F8. Choose Safe Mode. If this works, in safe mode click on start, click on run, type msconfig hit enter. Goto the startup tab and uncheck everything. Then restart and see if it works ok. If it works then there is a program starting that is crashing. If not, then the OS is probably corrupt. Then you should use your windows XP install cd to do a repair of the OS. Do this by putting the CD in and booting the machine from the CD and follow the instructions to repair windows. Hope this helps

Sounds like something happened that damaged the one memory stick. Simple static shock (such as you get from rubbing your feet on a carpter) can damage them.

Confirm that it is always the same memory stick that fails, and not the same memory slot (slots can go bad also). If it is always the same stick, they you need to replace it.

If it is always the same slot which fails, then you will be unable to use that slot. You may have to purchase a larger memory stick for the good slot.

Your memory SLOT has gone bad, happens all the time. You need to have your motherboard replaced. Try contacting Toshiba for a replacement but don't try to do it yourself. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a bad stick of RAM.
If your laptop is still under warranty, get it replaced. If it isn't under warranty, buy another stick.
Whatever you do, don't put the bad stick back in the machine.
