That depends on the animal. For rabbits, they make a vitamin powder that you add to their water. It actually helps them get over colds. They also have a mineral supplement you can add to the water for rabbits also. Many rabbit breeders across the country put vitamin supplemented water in for their rabbits. The powder is usually a yellow powder. I think Vitamin A is what it mainly consists of with a few B vitamins possibly added.

I'd say for most animals it should be alright as long as you don't go overboard. A number of vitamins can be toxic if too much of them is given.

That would rather be like asking is it safe to give your kids a bottle of vitamins as a snack. No, it's not really safe because it's giving them additional vitimins and minerals that their bodies do not need. I do not see that it would hurt then to give them a SMALL amount once in a great while though.
