I hate that triple screen test..I tested pos for things too on two of my kids and they are fine...there are so many false pos. on it i don't know why they give it..if you are really worried about her tell her to take the level 3 ultrasound and that will show any problems usually...my level 3's were fine although my tests were pos, and my kids are healthy. there are so many other factors that can contribute to a false pos...

I was 4 months pregnant when I tested positive for spina bifida. They should either do amniocentesis or an extensive ultrasound to see if they were correct. Just make sure your sister knows that they will usually prepare her for the worst. I was told my son would be mentally retarded and would never know his own parents. Today he is 2 1/2 years old and he's at or above age level in everything except for walking. If you need anymore advice or help, feel free to email me.

Iam assuming she just had her quad tests.
Those are 60% false positives, and unless your sister is over 30 its not worth taking.
I wish hospitals would stop doing those tests without just cause. They cause soooo much stress on moms.
Even if they do come back with a true positive on down syndrom or spina bifida, or the other issues, unless you have hundreds of thousands of dollars and good insurace, and decides to take the high risks associated with surgery there isnt antyhing to be done.

She probably took the triple screen test to get these results. The triple screen tests the levels of certain hormones in the mother's system; high amounts of these hormones have been linked to abnormalities such as spinal bifida but the test itself is only meant as an indicator as to whether or not future tests should be scheduled, it is not intended to actually diagnose a problem. If the doctor is not worried then your sister shouldn't be either. I know plenty of people whose indicator tests showed a potential problem and the baby was fine.

MANY of those genetic defect test results can come back with a false positive. She really shouldn't work herself (or you) up about it... not yet. She has some more tests coming up which should come up with a more reliable test result. It's important to pray that whether this is a perfectly healthy baby, or that the baby does have something wrong that he is there through all of it and is able to bless this baby and the family with whatever his will may be. God bless!

This happened to my sister when she was pregnant with my nephew. The doctor said there was a slight chance of Down Syndrome, but not to worry (like your sister). My sister was a high risk pregnancy so she was taking too much risk with additional testing. She figured that whatever child she was blessed with she would love regardless. My nephew was born almost 7 years ago - no Down Syndrome! He is actually highly intelligent and one of the smartest little boys in his class! So, I know what you are going through. That's your sister - you love her and want the best things for her. Don't worry if the doctor says not to. Think of my story when it gets you down! All my best to you . . .

Believe me....take it seriously because I never had a test done, but I had 2 sonograms during my pregnancy which we still didn't see any problems, and I was surprised to find out that my son had a severe case of spina bifda L3 at birht. I wasn't prepared and it was so hard to adjust. Make sure she has a sonogram professionally done by a radiologist that knows what they are doing to view up and down the spinal cord. GOOD LUCK!!

Without all the information, the best I can do for you is an educated guess.
First of all, the tests that are run when you are pregnant, have a margin of error.
I believe it's something like 50% of the first postitives end up being completely fine. out of the other 50% only like 10-12% end up with the disease and can't find out until the baby is born(?) or with an amnio? and the other % ends up with something else wrong with them, but not the orginal horrible disease.
Just pray for your sister and her baby. That's all you can do.

When I was pregnant the Dr was concerned because my uterus was large for the estimated weeks which indicated it could be variety of problems including down syndrome. Ended up I was pregnant with twins! They do and say things as precautions to give a heads up. Just wait and see what any further test indicate.

If the doctor said that he isn't worried, then why stress out. Try to be calm for your sister. Slightly elevated means they found a trace but it could be false. So don't freak out. Just relax, I am sure she's fine
