The government and auto companies could do something about it, but they don't.

It is for the same reason why we keep using fossil fuels, even though scientists warn that they contribute to global warming and we will eventually run out of fossil fuels. Humans will take the easy way as long as we can (eventually the government and car companies will have to change).

And the whole idea about electric cars not causing pollution. FALSE. Many people don't realize that most electtricity in the US comes from the burning of fossil fuels. So an electric car still indirectly pollutes the environment.

The auto companies have actually made attempts at making cars that pollute less (hybrids). The downside is that waste is often generated during the production of these cars, so they still pollute.

I think that one day the government will do something about it (not willingly, of course). They will have no choice because the supplies of current fuels will be exhausted or the effects of global warming/pollution will be more noticeable.

This is something that has bugged people for years. If the government didn't back the oil companies and the auto manufacturers, the automobile would have been further along today than it is now. I mean twenty-five years ago there was a man who built an engine in Central California that ran on water. He drove the car to New York City and back on a cup and a half of water. When he got back to California he went to the patent office and patented his invention. When he came out of the office he was met by a stretch limo containing three of the CEO's of big oil and three of the CEO's of auto manufacturers. He was told, not asked to sell them his patent. If he did they would give him four billion dollars tax free. If he refused they told him they would have him killed and everyone in his family and all their friends until no one knew who or what it was he invented. Needless to say he sold them the patent and no one today knows that 25 years ago, the greatest invention of the 20th/21st Century was stashed away by big oil and that even if he had gotten away with it, the government would have ostracized him for putting down the oil companies and destroying the infrastructure of the working people in America. What they didn't tell him was that he would also be creating millions of jobs in all manufacturing fields that would be able to run machines with only water, thus clearing and cleaning up the environment in only about 150 years instead of the thousand years it will take now. Hybrid engines are not the way to go, they are still not efficient or clean. When a vehicle or machine takes the hydrogen out of the water and runs like a top, then recycles the water to do it again, there are no hydrocarbons going into the atmosphere. That is why the almighty dollar and greed run not only this country, but the whole world. In my opinion.
