.. well if you do you probably believe in the freedom of others to do their thing too. I mean I havn't met a single Muslim who wants the Western way of life, and when I stay in Arab countries which I have done several times, not only the men express a strong distaste for the Western way of life but the women are even more disparaging.
So why not leave all this talk about the poor downtrodden women in that part of the world, and the poor badly educated children in that part of the world, and let them decide for themselves in their own countries what kind of life they want .. that includes genital mutilation too .. if that's what they want. That's freedom.

brianthesnailuk - they couldn't care less for your kindness. What they want is to be allowed to live their own lives in their own culture according to their own customs. Incidentally .. they believe your culture is not only crap but evil, intentionally or not, and a lot of them would be glad to wipe it of the face of the earth.

Neil M - are you brainwashed ..? of course not. are you able to see anything different ..? of course. Then why asume in that patronising manner of yours that anyone else is any different. They can see quite clearly what they want.

ana majnoon - so you believe genital mutilation is disgusting ..? but the Jewish faith, and many Arabs too, get circumcised almost as a matter of routine. Have been doing it for years and years, wouldn't want it any other way, in fact try to stop them.

It's not our place to say what is freedom for other people. There are many people in the arab world who are very happy following sharia law, even in its strictist format.

I find it nothing short of sheer arrogance for the 'west' to want to determine how people live their lives in completely different traditions. Muslims, for example, who are unhappy with sharia law or unhappy with their way of life will move. Same that westerners who are unhappy with their way of life move too.

Freedom is a personal thing that can exist on an individual level. But too much freedom is never a good thing.

So when a group live in a Western country and decide to only obey their own rules ..... that is fine even if open to gross mis-use and pain for those people ? After all, to have two or more codes of ethics (let alone law) in any one country would only fuel hate and race problems obviously. Ultimately any country cannot give ultimate freedom to an individual to do what they want .... hence the boundaries of law.

I do not personally see it as brainwashing to feel that negativity and humiliation towards anyone, of any race, colour or creed is a bad thing. I see that as being a human of kind soul.

You say you have never met a muslim who wants the 'western way of life.' I say you are full of it.
Have you not seen the increase of muslims in America? I live in Dallas and it is very obvious here. When I lived in Georgia, there was also a large muslim population.
While I was in Iraq, our intrepretors were all sending their paychecks to their families and sending their families to the U.S.
I spoke to Iraqis while I was there and the majority said that they wanted to have more opportunities. If that were untrue, then how do you explain the extremely large number of people who showed up to vote on their election day 2 and a half years ago? I saw it, because I was there.
You, on the the other hand, are just talking out of your a**.
Freedom is not the 'western way of life' nor is it the current life they have. Freedom is being given the opportunity to chose the lifestyle you want to lead. Not being forced to live one way or the other.
And if the women of Africa and other countries that practice genital mutilation wanted it to continue, then how do you explain the safe houses specifically built to keep young girls from undergoing that horrific experience???

How can a person decide what kind of life they want if they arent given more than one option?

Freedom is an illusion. America is called the land of the free. My girlfriend lives there and I visit often.

Her colleagues at her university often discuss how American people are dissuaded from holding certain views and following certain causes because of the surveillance undertaken by government agencies like the CIA and FBI.

One group of students formed a friendship society for Christian/Muslim students. The parents of some of them were visited by suited men asking if they knew what their children were up to!!

I told them about my visits to Bulgaria and Roumania during the iron curtain years and how certain conversations would be cut short because people were too uncomfortable talking.
Several of these students, mostly post grads in their thirties by the way, remarked that they had felt similar feelings.

You can call it freedom as much as you like, but none of us are free. We are all constrained. Those who shout loudest about freedom are usually the most imprisoned.

They only agree and want that way of life because they are used to it and, like most people, do not look forward to change, even for the better.
I used to know someone who was born and lived in dire poverty in a dire house in a dire district for several years, and when the council built new high-rise blocks with running hot water, inside toilet and bath - where they had none before - they complained about `wanting the old days back again.`
Think about religion, religious people cannot change because they know no different and do not appreciate the freedom that non-religion brings. In short, not many people like change.

i agree w/ you, because they are happy w/ their way of life, so who are we (americans) to tell them that it isn't right. but i think people over there are more educated then people in america, and they have a better school system. because in every other country in the world but america you take all regular subjects until high school and in high you decide what you want to do and take a test and then you work in whatever field the test says you can. which doesn't waste as much time as american schools. because i am in high school and am being forced to take classes that i don't need and that won't help me in the future. but i have to wait until college to take things to help me become what i want to be and in other countries they get right to the point a whole lot faster. so i like their education systems more. i think genital mtilation is disgusting, but that is a part of some people's culture. but i don't think america will ever leave other countries alone about freedom, even though america isn't as great as everyone is making it out to be

That is a good point. However I think that very often people think that they want one thing because they don't see anything different. A type of brainwashing.

The women you spoke to: Did they want genital mutilation on THEMSELVES? probably not - just their kids durr.

believe in freedom. believe in the free will to express and do whatever I want as long as it does NOT interfere with the free will and rights of others to do what they want OR as long as I do NOT violate the laws, rules and mores of the culture, society, or Country in which I reside.

You don't have to want 'the western way of life' to want freedom.

Dumb azz.

And plenty of muslims want freedom.
