All the water drops which produce the image of a rainbow should subtend a particular angle at your eye.If this criteria is to be fullfilled, then all the drops should lie in a circular path in front of you .So, the image created by these drops also becomes circular.

after refraction, the rays passing thru droplets are in different directions. only those who come in a proper arc like formation will fall on our eye. so, a person standing near us maybe seeing a rainbow, which we cant see.
