In the UK, when a certain industry (e.g. hairdressing), product or city (e.g. Brighton) is mainly dominated by LGBT people, they are tagged (usually by the media) as being run by the "Pink Pound". I don't know if I'm actually just being hyper-sensitive, but I find it quite annoying because frankly my money isn't coloured any different to anyone else's, and just because I am gay doesn't mean I like or wear pink! Is such a term as the "Pink Dollar" or "Pink Euro" etc. ever coined (excuse the pun) in your country, and do you get annoyed by it? Or am I just becoming cantankerous in my old age?

lol Juan whilst we did give the world the Spice Girls (for which I am eternally sorry) we also gave you The Beatles, Clive Owen, Jude Law, Roxy Music, The Police, Tandoori Chicken Massala, the steam engine and the English Language, so really, not that bad!

I also actually quite like pink and do wear it, but not as a sign that I am a true man, just because I want to.

it's not "tagged" in that fashion, the pink pound effect is a Economics term, referring to the way that many LGBT couples tend to have more disposable income because of no children ( and a tendancy for men to earn more due to the female "glass roof" effect).

it's not meant to be degrading, and i'd prefer it be called that than the "queer pound" effect or something like that.

i'm bisexual, i'm -not- effiminate.. but i do like pink. why? i don't know. i just like the colour ( but i don't like all the fluff, peh!)

Thanks a lot, now I have to explain why I am laughing so hard in the middle of cubical city!!! (over the pun, not the question) Anyway, no there is not a term such as the "pink dollar" here in the US. I don't think it was meant as an insult, but actually a wake up call. It shows that poeple in the LGBT community have just as much econimic power as the straight population. However, I am not a fan of the term. I think it may detur straight people from frequenting the shops and businesses in that particular area. If other areas were tagged as being dominated by heterosexuals, it may detur LGBT poeple from that area. It is a 2 way street, but could never be expressed. Take for example the manufacturing industry. These are some of the highest paying "blue collar" jobs in the US, and they are dominated by straight men. However, if the news were to publicize this, there would be soooo many Equal Oppertunity lawsuits the manufacturing industry would go bust. Now take the entertainment industry. This field could be classified as being prodomintaely a LGBT industry, and people would show a little disagreement as of course there are many many heteros in entertainment, but no one would really protest. This is a big double standard which is propetuated by the media and their "clever" phrases such as the "pink pound." So, all in all, I am not sure if this even came close to an answer, my brain has kind of run away. I am pretty sure I have made no sence at all, but I tried.

There is a deeper occult reason with the pink colour. Pink is a colour which is always like/loved by every one. May be the flesh is pink and all that...... I do not know. But certain industries/activities like cutting hair, massaging, nursing and even some aspects of surgery requires that you love the male or female body you are handling. Gays (and perhaps lesses) are the ones who come out top in this category. I am sorry hets, but you just do not have the compassion.......So think along these lines and you may get an insight.

I have never heard of a "Pink Dollar" or Euro, in Canada. It is true that apparently it "takes a real man to where pink" in Canada as well. I wear pink occasionally, and I am gay. So be it. Yeah, I also hate those stereotypes, Hairdresser=gay, male Interior designer=gay, because that is what I plan on pursuing, coincidence? No.

Closest thing in the US are references to the Gay Mafia, a clique of supposedly wealthy and powerful gay men, such as David Geffen.

It's not that way in America. Our economic power is taken into consideration by a lot of companies, but I haven't heard it referred to as the pink dollar. Besides, here it would probably be the rainbow dollar.

Interesting, since this is like a marketing ploy to show how much gays contribute to the economy.

Granted I agree that ones sexuality is personal and needs to be no ones business, but stunts like this are to show how much others depend on the gay community.

Mwa ha ha ha! Coined!

I think, perhaps, that it's kind of a euphemism for gay dollars being spent on one certain thing, one certain place, etc. And, while it's pretty stereotypical to attach pink to us fairies, it does kind of have a kitchy ring to it, doesn't it? :)

I'm American, BTW - and I have no pink dollars. But I do accept them! :)

It wouldn't be tolerated in the US. I wouldn't take it seriously, that would give it creedence. Besides, what do expect from a nation that the world The Spice Girls?
