Buying used is the best deal if you can get it dealer certified with a warranty. New cars depreciate (lose a ton of value) as soon as you drive them off the lot and you're immediately upside down on the car if you financed it. Leases aren't good either, because you end up owing a ton at the end to buy that depreciated car or lose all of the money you paid into a lease.

Leasing is cheaper during the lease, but then they charge you for excess mileage and depreciation at the end and take the car back. You're farther ahead to buy the car. Check the actual mileage because it is almost 5 years old. If you have access to a mechanic who would check the car out, then do so. The dealer's mechanics have a vested interest in selling the car but since there is likely no warranty, any problems you find after the purchase will be "new" and not something you can come back on the dealer for. What is the monthly payment on the Echo versus the Yaris? Is there a newer used car that you can afford the payment on?

I buy new ones because it feels great to own a new car. The smell...the look...everything about it. But then I drive it off the lot and it depreciates 10%. Next time, I think I might buy used. I know a lot more about buying cars than I used to. Now, I'll get approved for a loan from the bank of my choice first, bargain with the salesman (not let them lead me where they want to be), and walk out getting a great deal.

I will never lease a car or buy a used one again. I may as well just burn my money.

Buy new and plan on keeping them as long as they'll run with minimum repairs. I have a 1988 Dodge Colt with less than 65,000 miles on it. Today's cars have too many bells and whistles - mine has a rear-window defogger, period. All I require from a car is that it start when I turn the key, stop when I put on the brakes and run between those times.
