Linalool (IPA: [lɪˈnæləʊɒl]) is a naturally-occurring terpene alcohol chemical found in many flowers and spice plants with many commercial applications, the majority of which are based on its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness).

Linalool is a compound produced by many fragrent plants -- especially herbs. It is used commerically in everything from soap to detergent to add fragrence.

When I toured a soap factory several years ago, I remember seeing this compound near the end of the manufactuing process. It was in two different forms: one was a powder that looked alot like flour and the the other was hydrated and looked alot like that pearly handsoap (fairly thick, too).

The main reason, I was told, for using this compound was that when it breaks down in the body and/or environment, it turns into vitamin E.

It's a water-white liquid about the consistency of thin corn syrup. It smells like lavender and bergamot, and it's used in perfumes.
