There are good reasons for the recommendation not to have intercourse immediately following delivery, whether you've had a vaginal birth or a c-section. The uterus and cervix undergo significant changes during the process of delivering a baby, and they need time to heal. During this healing phase the lining of the uterus, especially the site where the placenta was attached, is susceptible to infection. Intercourse, douching, tampons, and anything placed in the vagina may introduce bacteria, and cause an infection. The flow of lochia, which is a sign that the lining is healing, can last from three to eight weeks. When the lochia flow is no longer bright red, it signals that healing is near completion, and it's probably safe to have intercourse again. However, if you're still healing from an episiotomy or vaginal tear, you'll need to wait longer still.

Basically your not supposed to because of the risk of infection, however the midwife that I had with my second child told me that when I feel comfortable to start having sex again it would probably be fine. After 4 weeks my husband and I did start having sex again, and yes I was still a bit on the tender side. If it hurts, then maybe you should try waiting another week or 2.

The 6 week recommendation is a blanket recommendation based on the latest most women will be ready to have sex without complications (like tearing, or infection). However as I said it is the latest most women will be ready, implying that almost all women are ready earlier than that.
If you feel up for sex just take it easy and stop if it hurts. You know your body best.

You can begin having sex as soon as you feel comfortable. Some women take longer than the 6 weeks to feel ready, some are ready before. The are no side effects. Just take it easy at first.

It can hurt, or tear the episionomy if you had one. It can also cause infection.
But its not like its going to kill you or something.
Plenty of women have sex before if they feel their bodies are ready.
its good to give your body that extra time to heal. And remember, Irish Twins are made just like this. Even though you JUST had a baby, you can VERY EASILY make another.

Your vagina is very sensative and sore after giving birth and is easily open to infections.
If you needed stiches then you most deffinatly need to wait until your 6wk checkup so they can be removed and checked to see if your healed.
Not to mention you are your most fertile after giving birth, I can't tell you how many women I know who didnt wait to have sex until their 6wk appt went into their checkup to find they were pregnant again already.
