Quote from Henry Ford:

"History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's dam is the history we made today."

In a way, I do believe this. We've had millennia of wars, mainly caused by greed and religion, etc, from which to learn - and still we make the same mistakes. Have we become more civilized? I think if we had public spectator sports such as the Romans had, we'd still flock to slake our blood lust. And humans are still torturing animals all over the world for sport or sadism.

I am working towards a degree in History so I definitely don't agree with this. Events that happened in the past are what created the present. Saying that the past no longer matters is just short-sighted. There is also some truth to the old adage that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Only people who want to live their lives in ignorance agree with this statement. Henry Ford supported the Nazi's and was given an award by them. He was a racist of the worst kind. He even wrote pamphlets for the Nazi's! I will find my resource on this and get back to you with it.

If you want to change the way things are you have know how they got that way so you can affect that change! History is not about tradition but tradition is definitely all about history!

The award he was given was the Grand Cross of the German Eagle.

If we don't honor the past, then we should throw out all our books, movies, TVs and other "bunked" items that carry historical means of creating the present world.

Of course not! History is extremely important. To understand the present and the future, we must first understand the past.

No. It can affect the present if we would look back and Learn from history rather than repeating it.

It is the past that makes us who we are. The decisions made in the past are what made the world the way it is today.
Nations and countries did not just appear. Battles were fought, cities were built, families were bred and their line continued to give us the world and the people we have today. We must respect the past and learn from it.

Absolutely not! Humans have pretty regular patterns of behavior, so if we look at how people reacted to things in the past, and at the results of people's radical plans, we can be pretty sure of how things are going to turn out in the future. Or, we can learn from our mistakes.
