Check your battery to starter cable and connections. Corrosion between the cable and the terminal ends or dirty connections will produce the symptoms you describe.

go back to the beginning...is this a new unit?..if so, do you have a safety feature requiring you to sit on the sit to start it?..Trust me, they have these features...then, I have to ask...what about starter switch?..and you said you replaced the starter?..these don't go out as often as people think...alot of times..they just need to be refurbished, though our vendors would love it more if we sold you a high dollar starter...keep with the simple things...you say you had surgery?..get in your local phone book, look under gasoline engines and find a local sales and service dealer in your area...ask for an experienced tech...and talk with him...hope you didn't by pass any of the safety features....the 18 hp Briggs & Stratton is well worth putting the money into getting it fixed right..have a feeling that it's your switch...

Clicking usually indicates the solenoid or the battery. Test your battery on a load tester after charging. They sometimes show good but when they are load tested they aren't. If your battery is good move on to the solenoid.

cross the two large terminals on the starter solenoid if starter turns replace the solenoid if not you have a loose or corroded terminal
