it's a nicer, less explicit way of saying deep ****.

It's similar to saying "oh Fudge" instead of "Oh f*** .

I guess substituting bad words with food words eases the crudeness.

Deep yogurt can also refer to deep ecology. Deep ecology is a branch of sociology that considers all being both animate and inanimate to be of equal importance, hence, a local dairy cooperative that tries to live in harmony with nature might refer to the yogurt the produce as 'deep yogurt'. I know, it's not as fun as deep ****--but its a whole lot cooler.

In Korea, we used to say "deep kimshee." They all mean the same thing - You are in trouble."

Don't ask me why we frequently use food items to replace the "s" word

Yup! You're in deep **** you got it right. It's because yogurt is creamy, thick and smells funny.
